Methods for Rainwater Harvesting

Harvesting rainwater is something that a lot of people are not concerned about, mostly because they are not having problems with drought. However, nowadays drought is a much common thing that is happening all around the world and it is affecting more people than ever. If you have problems with drought during the hot summer season, then you should pay close attention to this article. Especially if you don’t like wasting things, then harvesting rainwater is one thing that you should do.

Permaculture designers and gardeners that have a lot of experience and knowledge about drought, know that collecting rainwater is very important and beneficial. There are plenty of options you can choose from to harvest the rainwater. Permaculture designer Vladislav Davidzon presented us with few of the most common methods of rainwater harvesting.

Barrel

If you are looking for the easiest and most cost-effective way to collect rainwater, then installing a barrel is the best option that you have. If you want to collect rainwater with the barrel, the fastest way to do it is to place the barrel on the end of the guttering system. That way, all the rain that is falling down on the roof will end up in your barrel. This is a very fast and effective way to collect rainwater. You can change the barrel with an empty one once you see that the first one is full. It is always recommended to have more than just one barrel of rainwater because during summer you never know when will be the next time you will have rain.

Barrels are very cheap to buy therefore, we recommend that you use a new clean barrel for this. Don’t use some old rusty and metal one, that will affect the rainwater. When you have barrels the one downside of them is that they can’t hold rainwater fresh for a long time, especially during hot summers because algae can start growing inside of them. And the only way to get rid of algae’s is by adding chlorine, and when water is mixed with chlorine it is not the best idea to use it for watering the garden.

Green Roof

This is a method that is different from any other because it doesn’t involve collecting and storing rainwater in a storage unit. With this method, you will be diverting the rainwater directly to your garden. That way your plants can get all the water immediately. The problem with this method is that if you hit a long summer that doesn’t have rain for long period of time you will have problems with drought. That’s why it is always the best option to have somewhere stored rainwater.

Dry System

This method of collecting rainwater is very similar to the barrel method, but it will provide you with much more water storage. You need to place a large container that can hold water near your guttering system so that you can divert the rainwater into the containers. This is also a cheap method that is very effective.
